About Us

Who We Are

Our VSC Faculty Federation (VSCFF), includes three distinct faculty bodies, governed by three separate contracts. Our members include the full time faculty and the part time faculty of the Vermont State College system (Northern Vermont University (NVU), Vermont Technical College (VTC), Castleton University (CU)], and, since 2018, all of the faculty (including online faculty) of the Community Colleges of Vermont (CCV).

Each campus elects full and part time representatives to meet as a Delegate Assembly (DA). The officers of the DA are elected by ballot across all the faculty bodies, and anyone can run for any office. Three times per semester the DA gathers around a big conference table for three-hour meetings to discuss the big picture and compare issues across campuses.

While the concerns of full time faculty are markedly different than those of part time faculty, and while the institutional structures of each college and community college vary greatly, our focus at the VSC Faculty Federation is to foster communication across faculty bodies, to enhance student experience, to bolster academic freedom, to support contract negotiation and enforcement, and to understand and respond to institutional change.

As part of our mission to enhance student experience the VSC Faculty Federation works with students and legislators in Montpelier to increase funding for the VSC; over the years we have sponsored the Reclaim the Promise campaign and now are advocating a Free Tuition VT platform. We also sponsor the VSC Student Symposium in Montpelier, which introduces legislators to students doing professional level research projects, many of which could have positive impact on Vermont.

By collaborating as a federation of three distinct faculty groups we maximize our effectiveness. We worked with CCV leadership to help their 800+ part time faculty win the right to unionize, and we supported them as they bargained for their first contract. As a federation we can streamline our administrative work, pool our funds to support legal fees (for grievances and contract negotiation), and coordinate our educational and political work in Montpelier.

Together we are better represented and informed, together we find ways to maximize our impact as educators who value academic freedom while prioritizing the needs of students.
